De Moivre's original derivation of the normal curve in a 7 page Note in Latin and its English translations in the 1738 and 1756 editions of his The Doctrine of Chances are described. Karl Pearson's and R. C. Archibald's views on it are discussed. The finding of three further copies of the Note is reported.
