This paper presents a method for updating the average efficiency factor of an {alpha}-design after an exchange or interchange in the {alpha}-array. This allows the average efficiency factor to be used directly as the objective function in an {alpha}-design computer search algorithm.

Key Words: {alpha}-design; average efficiency factor; design generation algorithm; exchange procedure; interchange procedure; latinised design; resolvable design
