General families of null hypotheses are defined which refer to problems of testing equivalence and difference between treatments. Corresponding confidence intervals have been proposed in the literature in a different context. The unifying approach demonstrates how waiving of particular one-sided tests in the parameter space relates to the construction of the corresponding confidence interval.
