Testing equality of probabilities of K mutually exclusive events against ordered alternatives

MARIO BARAS

Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Base Unit, University of California Los Angeles, California, U.S.A

The principle of maximal regression is applied to yield a test of equality of the probabilities of the possible outcomes of a multinomial trial against the ordered alternative of an upward trend. Numerical results concerning the sample size and the goodness of the approximation to the asymptotic distribution are reported. Some evaluations of the power are also made.

Key Words: Isotonic regression • Modified chi-squared • Multinomial distribution • Ordered alternative
