Use of the von Mises distribution to analyse continuous proportions
Department of Mathematics, Simon Fraser University Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
The von Mises distribution in p dimensions is suggested for the analysis of data which are proportions of a continuum such as time or volume. The one-way analysis-of-variance technique developed by Watson (1956) is extended to a multiway layout, and the methods are illustrated on data giving proportions of time spent in various activities. Other examples are briefly mentioned.
