MISCELLANEA

A mean difference estimator of standard deviation in symmetrically censored normal samples

M. J. R. HEALY

Department of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Downton's linear estimator of the standard deviation is adapted to symmetrically censored normal samples by tabulating the unbiasing factor. The efficiency of this estimator in small samples is studied, as well as its behaviour when applied to a contaminated normal distribution. Such an estimator may be useful in detecting outliers.

Key Words: Censored sample • Downton's linear estimator • Mean difference • Outlier • Robustness • Standard deviation
