Comparison of tests for normality using stylized sensitivity surfaces

P. PRESCOTT

Department of Mathematics, University of Southampton

Sensitivity surfaces and contours for test statistics are described for comparing several test procedures for normality, using complete samples. The contours are deterministic for a given sample size and illustrate the behaviour of the test statistics over a wide range of nonnormal data configurations. Five test statistics are considered in detail showing that plotting of sensitivity surfaces provides a compact means of comparing tests for normality without the need for large-scale empirical investigations.

Key Words: D test • Influence curve • Kurtosis • Outlier • Range • Sensitivity contour • Sensitivity surface • Skewness • Test for normality • W test
