This paper provides improved normal approximations to the von Mises distribution. New adjustments for certain chi-squared approximations to the distributions of the two useful angular statistics X and R are introduced. These are compared with the existing adjustments.

Key Words: Chi-squared approximations • Directions • Normal approximations • Resultant vector • von Mises distribution
