On species frequency models

STEINAR ENGEN

Department of Biomathematics, University of Oxford

An extension of the negative binomial model as a species frequency distribution is given by allowing the shape parameter k to take values between -1 and 0. Different estimation methods are assessed for this extended negative binomial model and the logarithmic series model. Tables for standard errors are given.

Key Words: Diversity • Ecology • Logarithmic series distribution • Negative binomial distribution
