MISCELLANEA

Another negative binomial model with varying element sizes

A.F. BISSELL

ICI Fibres Pontypool

Bissell (1972) has described a negative binomial model applicable to a Poisson process compounded through a gamma distribution, from which elements of varying magnitude are sampled. In this note, similar consideration are applied to the model arising from the Poisson process generalized through the logarithmic series distribution. Maximum likehood and least squares estimators are derived for the parameters of the model.

Key Words: Negative binomial model • Varying sample element sizes • Least squares estimation • Generalized Poisson distribution • Logarithmic series distribution • Maximum likelihood estimation
