MISCELLANEA

On the number of replications of a paired comparison: An easy solution with standard tables

WILLIAM C. GUENTHER

University of Wyoming

This paper presents a quick and easy solution to a problem discussed by De Cani (1971). The better of two treatments is defined as the one with the larger probability of winning a paired comparison between them. Experimentally, the treatment which first wins k comparisons is chosen as the better. The optimum value of k, defined as that value which minimizes the loss function, is determined by trial from standard tables.

Key Words: Paired comparison • Minimized loss function • Binomial distribution
