Censored overlapping Poisson counts

IAN B. MacNEILL

University of Western Ontario

Methods are proposed for estimating the parameter of a homogeneous Poisson process using censored counts obtained from a sequence of overlapping regions. Properties of several estimators, including those introduced by Moore (1952, 1954) for independent Poisson counts, are examined in the context of overlapping. Also discussed are the consequences of overlapping on a type of censoring effected by certain echo-counting devices. The methods are applied to some generated data.

Key Words: Echo counting • Poisson process • Moore's estimator for censored Poisson distribution
