MISCELLANEA

Population symmetry and the regions{X≤t2/X}

R. C. JUOLA

The University of Texas at Austin

A family of tests of symmetry against nonsymmetric alternatives is developed based on a characterization of symmetric random variables. It is found that for shift alternatives the family includes the sign test and further provides an easy calculation of the distribution of the sign test statistic under the alternative.
